GLSCL announces 2009 All-Star representatives
From the Great Lakes League
DELAWARE, Ohio – After compiling the top two records in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League at the halfway point of the season, both Lima and Grand Lake lead all vote getters with seven representatives for next week’s 2009 GLSCL All-Star game in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The festivities, which are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, will be capped off with the All-Star game at 6:35 p.m. Prior to the contest, MLB scouts will have the opportunity to evaluate some of the league’s top prospects in various skill competitions. More than 30 scouts attended last year’s festivities, which showcased a talent pool that produced 41 draftees in last month’s Major League Baseball draft. All events will be held at Western Hills High School, the home of the Cincinnati Steam.
The blue team, coached by the Mariners’ Brandon Tormoehlen, will be represented by Grand Lake, Cincinnati, Xenia, Hamilton and Lake Erie. Rob Livchek of the Locos will coach the red team, which will be represented by Lima, Licking County, Stark County, Southern Ohio and Anderson.
Among the top prospects selected to participate in the festivities is Kolbrin Vitek (Ball State) of Lake Erie and Aaron Thompkins (Furman) of Stark County – the top two hitters in the league. Colbrin is hitting .405 with six double and six runs batted in through 11 games for the Monarchs. Thompkins, meanwhile, is hitting .400 with a pair of triples and seven RBIs for the Terriers.
The league’s top run producer, Reed Spitaels (Bethel) of Anderson, will also represent the red team after driving in a league-best 20 runs. Ryan Strausborger (Indiana State) of Cincinnati will represent the blue team after pacing the GLSCL with 25 runs scored.
Starting pitchers have yet to be announced for the All-Star game, but both teams sport nine pitchers, all of whom will throw one inning apiece. Stark County’s Ryan Mace (Kent State) is among the league leaders when toeing the rubber, as he has yet to allow a run through 16 innings of work this season, while also holding opponents to a .111 batting clip. Lima’s Tyler Newhart (Wright State) has also turned in a superb first half, as he posted a 2-0 record and a 1.35 ERA through 20 innings.
Rosters can be found here.

Week Four Rankings
SUMMER 25: Owls Retain No. 1 Rank
Compiled by Allan Simpson (PG Crosschecker) / Andrew Hartwell (College Summer Ball)
So far, so good for the Coastal Plain League’s Forest City Owls. After posting the CPL’s best first-half record in league history at 24-3, the Owls jumped out to a quick 5-1 start (only to lose Tuesday night) to take over first place again in the Western Division—and retain their position as the nation’s No. 1-ranked summer-league team.
The Owls also finished first in the first half a year ago, but were swept aside by the hard-charging Thomasville Hi-Toms in the second half. The Hi-Toms (41-20 overall) then went on to win their third straight CPL title and finish with a No. 7 national ranking.
Forest City is in its second season in the CPL after moving to the western North Carolina community from Spartanburg, S.C., after the 2007 season. It has gotten a lot of mileage from unexpected sources this summer.
Righthander Spencer Patton went just 4-6, 5.24 with 77 strikeouts in 69 innings as an undrafted starter at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville this spring, but has gone 5-0, 1.26 with a league-best 68 strikeouts in 43 innings as the Owls ace this summer. Closer Robbie Andrews also went undrafted in June after posting a modest 1-1, 5.56 record with two saves and just 24 strikeouts in 44 innings at Virginia Commonwealth. But he has responded this summer by posting a perfect 0.00 ERA along with nine saves for the Owls. In his first 12 innings, he didn’t walk a batter.
Morevover, the Owls have gotten significant offensive production from corner infielders Konstantine Diamaduros (.299-7-50 at Wofford) and Pratt Maynard (.261-6-40), who were both college freshmen this spring. Diamaduros, a first baseman, has hit .347-3-26 for the Owls, while Maynard, the team’s third baseman, leads the CPL with 31 RBIs, 32 runs scored and 24 walks, while batting .353 with four homers.
No doubt, it will be a challenge for the Owls to hang on to the No. 1 spot through the balance of the summer season. They would have to supplant Thomasville as the CPL’s top team in 2009, but also hold off an expected charge from the top team in the prospect-rich and more established Cape Cod League.
That may end up being No. 2 Chatham, No. 5 Bourne or No. 6 Yarmouth-Dennis, who all have considerably more raw talent than Forest City, but may have to win the Cape League title to have a shot at overtaking Forest City—if the Owls should win out.
Chatham raced out to a 9-1 start this season, and its roster has only been enhanced since with the addition of hard-throwing, 6-foot-6 righthanders Matt Harvey (North Carolina) and Jesse Hahn (Virginia Tech), both former teammates at a Connecticut high school. Harvey and Hahn are projected early first-round picks in the 2010 draft.
Yarmouth-Dennis, meanwhile, won Cape Cod League titles in 2006-07. The Red Sox have picked up their pace considerably after a slow start, and were expected to make a run at Chatham in the Cape’s Eastern Division with the anticipated addition of catcher Micah Gibbs and righthander Anthony Ranaudo, two stalwarts from Louisiana State’s 2009 College World Series championship team. However, only Gibbs, who homered twice in his second game at Y-D, made it to the Cape. Ranaudo, who pitched for Y-D last summer, decided to shut it down for the balance of the summer after a 124-inning workload this spring for LSU.
We’ll rank the top 25 summer college league teams every Tuesday or Wednesday from 20-plus leagues around the country, and here’s our take on the top teams in Week Four (last week’s ranking noted in parentheses).

Giansanti was also elected captain of next year's team by a private vote of the returning members of next year's roster. Read the rest of this entry here.
Mavericks Fall to River Rats
From Summer Ball News Source
Sanford- The Clermont Mavericks fell 9-5 to the Sanford River Rats Tuesday night at Sanford Memorial Stadium. Both teams combined for 21 walks and six errors on the night. The Mavericks now stand at 9-15 on the season with the Rats improving to 16-11.
Clermont leadoff man Tyrone Wethers (New Orleans) walked to lead off the game and stole second. The stolen base was Wethers’ team-leading twelfth of the year. Wethers then scored on an error to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
Wethers recently tied the league record for the consecutive hit streak, hitting safely in 13 games before going 0 for 5 in Clermont’s 13-3 win over the DeLand Suns on Sunday.
The Rats, however, answered back in the bottom of the third. Drew Morgan (Western Kentucky) walked to lead off the inning and scored when John Prano (Marist) ripped a single down the first base line. Jordan Yost (West Virginia) walked and later scored on a passed ball. David Schulze (Samford) and Chris Smelley (Alabama) both scored on errors to give the Rats a 5-1 lead.
The Mavericks scored again in the fifth when Ben Scheffer (Florida Atlantic) doubled to lead off the inning. Scheffer advanced to third on a Derek Abis (Jacksonville) fly ball. Scheffer then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Wethers.
Tyler Benzel (Louisiana Lafayette) doubled in the sixth for the Mavericks. Benzel moved over to third on a single by Ryan Semeniuk (Wake Forest) and scored on an error.
Trailing 9-3 going into the eighth inning, the Mavericks began to rally. Semeniuk walked to reach base with one out. Nathan Hartman (Santa Fe CC) lined out to the shortstop for the second out of the inning. Sanford relief pitcher Delgis Soto (Seminole CC) walked the next three batters to score Semeniuk. With the bases still loaded, Wethers hit a laser right back to Soto, who was unable to handle the ball. Scoring on the play was Tim Dye. Soto got Chase Okey (Lake Sumter CC) to ground out to first base to end the bases-loaded threat.
The Mavericks will play the Leesburg Lightning Wednesday night at home. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
