From the Coastal Plain League
The Morehead City Marlins announced today the hiring of Christopher Marmo as the club’s new General Manager for their inaugural season in the Coastal Plain League.
Marmo has been working in the Coastal Plain League for the past three seasons. Marmo spent last season as the General Manager of the Thomasville HiToms in the west division. During the 2007 and 2008 campaigns, Marmo served as the Assistant General Manager with the Wilson Tobs of the north division. Marmo was an integral part of many departments of each organization that included sales, marketing, concessions, stadium operations, and ticket operations.
A graduate of York College in sport management, Marmo started his career in baseball in 2004 as a ticket operations assistant for the Somerset Patriots in the Atlantic League. Marmo, a Cranford, NJ native, continued his work experience in 2005 with the New Jersey Sport and Exposition Authority at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, NJ as an event marketing assistant.
“I am very excited to be a part of something so special in such a welcoming and established area,” Marmo said. “I am looking forward to working with the Morehead City community and surrounding communities and hope to see everyone at O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium this summer.”
“We are very excited to have someone with Chris’s background as our General Manager,” said Marlins Vice President Buddy Bengel. “He will bring experience in the Coastal Plain League to our franchise. Johnson and Viola Return
From the Florida Collegiate Summer League
Former All-Star and Major League Manager of the Year Davey Johnson, in his second year with the Florida League, will be managing the Sanford River Rats for the summer of 2010. Johnson managed the DeLand Suns in 2009 and had a highly successful first season with the Florida League. The Suns got off to a hot start, beginning the season 14-0. Although the amazing run didn’t continue throughout the entire season, the Suns easily finished the regular season in first place, finishing with a 24-11 record, before losing in the second round of the playoffs. Johnson, who has remarked that he loves the opportunity to teach younger players about the game, will surely bring excitement to the city of Sanford this summer.
Another top-tier coach, former Cy Young Award Winner and World Series MVP Frank Viola, will be returning to the Florida League this year. Viola will be returning to the Leesburg Lightning for the third straight season and the city of Leesburg should be excited with the news. Viola led the Lightning to an 18-18 regular season record last season alongside his son, Frankie, who was one of his assistant coaches. More importantly, however, Viola helped lead the team through a sweep of the playoffs to the franchise’s second Florida League Championship. Leesburg beat a surging Clermont team in dominant fashion in the championship game at Tropicana Field, with the final score 5-1 in favor of the Lightning. With the victory, the Lightning became the first franchise in Florida League history to win two championships. The excitement will be high for the beginning of this year as well, so make sure to check in on all of the action at www.floridaleague.com.
The Florida League is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and one of nine leagues in the country supported and partially funded by Major League Baseball and is one of eight leagues affiliated with the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball (NACSB) - an alliance of college summer wood bat leagues which operate under NCAA legislation.

McNair Field will host five days of collegiate baseball in February, beginning with Western Carolina versus Gardner-Webb February 20 and 21. Both games will begin at 2 pm. The following weekend, Forest City will be the host for the inaugural North South Challenge. After four starts and 15 appearances as a sophomore, Trent sat out his junior year with a shoulder injury and got a medical redshirt. The right-hander has shown potential during the past fall season, posting average speeds of 91-92.

Copperheads Announce Signing of Four Outfielders, Two Pitchers
From the Coastal Plain League
The Asheboro Copperheads continue to bolster their 2010 roster by announcing the signing of a talented group of outfielders who have already posted some impressive collegiate numbers, plus a couple of pitchers from defending Big Ten champion and nationally-ranked Ohio State.
Justin Wilson of UNC Charlotte, Xavier Macklin of North Carolina A&T, Kevin Deese of West Alabama, along with Ryan Honeycutt of the University of New Mexico will be honing their offensive skills against Coastal Plain League opposition this summer. From Ohio State, the Copperheads will be getting a pair of righthanded pitchers, junior Jared Strayer and freshman Brett McKinney.
Wilson was a second-team All-Atlantic 10 selection for the 49ers in 2009 when he hit .364, scored 53 runs, drove in another 38 and stole 19 bases. A native of Canton, NC and a 6-1, 190-pound junior at Charlotte, Wilson hit .414 with runners in scoring position for the 49ers last spring and put together an amazing streak when he had 10 consecutive hits and earned A-10 Player of the Week honors.
A&T’s Xavier Macklin is looking to continue the offensive form that earned him first-team All-MEAC honors as a freshman and landed him on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s first team Freshman All-American squad. Macklin, a 6-2, 190-pounder out of Rocky Mount, hit .364 for the Aggies last spring with 12 homers and 51 RBIs. He led the team in hits and also stole 14 bases. Macklin played briefly with the Wilson Tobs in the CPL last summer, but returned home to play American Legion ball and led his team to the state tournament by hitting close to .500.
Deese, a 6-4, 205-pound junior from Tuscaloosa, hit a school record 17 home runs for the Division II West Alabama Tigers as a sophomore, driving in 54 runs and posting a slugging percentage of .634. He had 18 multi-hit games, hit .over .300 and earned a spot on the Division II All-Regional team.
Ryan Honeycutt was one of the top hitters in the Mountain West Conference as a sophomore for the Lobos. The 6-0, 195-pounder from Las Cruces, hit a robust .406 for the season with 25 multi-hit games. He was among the MWC leaders in hits (80) and RBIs (53), posted an on-base percentage of .472 and belted six home runs. One of his multi-hit games came against San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg and in two games against the No. 1 MLB draft pick Honeycutt went 3-for-7.
From Ohio State, the Copperheads will be getting an experienced pitcher in Strayer, a 6-1, 180-pound junior, along with highly-regarded 6-2, 225-pound freshman McKinney. Strayer is in his fourth season in the Buckeye program and is expected to be a major factor out of the bullpen. He had a 1.80 ERA against Big Ten opponents a year ago and actually got a start in the NCAA Tournament against Florida State. McKinney went to Columbus after being one of Ohio’s most sought after prep hurlers. He is expected to get innings right away for the Buckeyes and was particularly impressive in two starts in the Buckeyes’ Scarlet and Gray World Series in October, giving up just one earned run in 10 innings and notching a pair of victories. As a junior and senior in high school he went a combined 18-2 with 145 strikeouts in 124 innings and was named the state’s 2009 D-III Player of the Year.
“I am very excited about this group of players, especially the proven talent we have in the outfield,” said Donnie Wilson, the 2010 head coach for the Copperheads who is a current assistant at College of the Sequoias in California. “Those four outfielders are all proven college hitters, three of them at the D-I level and the other at a very good D-II school (West Alabama) that plays a very tough schedule. They give us the potential to be a very productive offensive team.”
“I feel good about the two Ohio State pitchers as well,” added Wilson. “One (Strayer) has already gotten quite a bit of experience at a very high level and the other (McKinney) is a freshman, but a very impressive kid who is expected to contribute right away, probably as a starter for a team that is nationally ranked. Both are certainly going to play key roles on our pitching staff this summer.”
Asheboro is a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Heading into its 14th season with 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, the CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with wooden bats during the summer months.
